La Caleta de Famara is a small fishing village situated at one end of the four kilometre Famara beach. The magnificent Famara Cliffs form an awesome backdrop to the sandy bay, their sheer sides rising to a height of 670 metres. A sunken trawler, broken into two parts, bears silent witness to the occasional ferocity of the seas on this coast, the height of the still visible masts depending on the tide. The majority of local villagers earn their living by fishing and the richness of the local catch can be sampled in any one of several local restaurants. The beautiful waters are popular among windsurfers, but swimmers should be very careful as there are often treacherous crosscurrents. | |
